A member asked:

How likely is it to get permanent lung damage from whooping cough as a teen?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Whooping cough provides the greatest risk to infants under 1 year old. Their effort to cough out mucus plugs at that age can cause brain damage/stroke/death. Older kids/teens have a different ratio of muscle mass/strength such that their cough is stronger & less likely to produce the infant level of damage. A teen may get very sick/experience lung damage and other complications.
