A member asked:

Medial meniscus: what does truncation and attenuation of the medial meniscal root mean? the thinning was seen before but it appears with only a small component of the meniscal root remaining intact. does the mean a tear is occurring?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

The medial meniscus is located on the inside part of the joint and is subject to much greater forces than the lateral (or outside) meniscus cartilage. Truncation and attenuation refer to chronic degenerative changes in the shape of the meniscus. These changes alone are rarely enough reason to consider a knee arthroscopy. However, that may change with time.
