Vaginal yeast infections usually do not result from catching yeast from outside the body. Yeasts are normally present in the intestines and vagina. For various reasons, the yeasts can grow in amount; or the immune system may start to react to them, causing symptoms. Antibiotic treatment often triggers a yeast problem, by suppressing bacteria, which allows yeasts to overgrow.
