A member asked:

My son recently had a cbc done and his mvc was low. it is 68fl. what could cause that?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

MCV?: Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) measures red blood cell (rbc) size. Low MCV means the cell is smaller than expected. This happens in some inherited conditions like thalassemia minor (rarely causes any problem except small rbcs). Or it can happen when there isn't enough iron in the diet. If the other parts of the CBC are normal, it's more likely the 1st answer. Ask his doc to explain further.
