The inguinal canal is a natural structure through which the testis descends from inside the abdomen within a sleeve of abdominal fascia. In fetal development it shrinks down in size but must remain large enough to permit blood flow through the testicular artery, vein & seminal vessel it surrounds. If it has enlarged in life & allowed a herniation of belly contents, it must be closed surgically.
