A member asked:

I have probably benign microcalcifications and a complicated cyst in same area on l. breast. cyst was biopsied, results benign. 2nd probably benign cyst in different area. f/u in 6 mos. why do i have microcalcifications? should i worry?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Microcalcifications (of a certain pattern on a mammogram) are an indication of Carcinoma in -situ which is a benign condition, can evolve into breast Cancer. So a cluster of calcifications is an indication for a biopsy or a close follow up for growth in and around the calcifications. In other words calcifications means high risk of breast Cancer. Therefore a biopsy is indicated in most such cases.
