A member asked:

What viruses/bacteria can cause tonsillar hypertrophy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Bacterial cause acute inflammation, not hypertrophy per se. Chronic infection with Epstein virus is the leading cause of tonsillar enlargement due to neoplasia. Hypertrophy is a technical with specific connotation of enlargement due to increase in the size of involved cells and that is not a usual cause of tonsillar enlargement.
