Long term "depo" use will suspend or interfere with ovulation, causing long absence of menstrual bleeding. Starting a bcp will generally produce some bleeding during the placebo week, but more reliably after several cycles, which allow for more regular proliferation of endometrial tissue, with withdrawal bleeding during the placebo week.
