HPV is in a family of viruses well know for their ability to hibernate indefinitely in human tissues once you are infected. The primary infection usually clears within 2 yrs so it is no longer being spread, but it may persist forever. The vaccine does nothing to clear a prior infection but can help you avoid the 9 or more strains you may have never had.

The immune system usually controls HPV, making the infection inactive and non-transmissible. However, HPV DNA may persist indefiitely. Usually this is harmless. HPV vaccine will protect you from 9 types of the virus, excpet by your age you probably have already been infected with some or most of them. But depending on sexual lifestyle, vaccine still could be considered. Discuss with your doctor.
