Novel coronavirus : SARS or severe acute respiratory syndrome was an explosive outbreak of adult respiratory distress syndrome that started in Hong Kong in 2003. Within weeks of the outbreak it was determined that SARS was caused by a novel coronavirus. It was found that this virus infected civets and horseshoe bats which were the zoonotic natural reservoirs.

SARS- CoV -2: SARS-CoV or SARS-CoV 2? The first SARS outbreak occurred in 2002 was related to SARS-CoV virus. The current outbreak began in 2019 and is related to the SARS-CoV2 virus. Both are beta coronaviruses that originated in China. SARS burned out & is no longer around but COVID is causing the current pandemic. Both are respiratory illnesses that have potential to cause severe illness and death.
