A member asked:

I was prescribed bactrim ds for a uti but suspect it is actually chlamydia. will a naat test work, or would it be masked by taking bactrim? in either case, should i request another drug like azithromycin? thanks?

The sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim should not interfere with the nuclei acid testing. I’m curious as to what makes you think it is caused by chlamydia...If you DO, indeed, have a U. T. I., you should probably finish the Bactria DS. A single 1 gram dose of azithromycin is still the recommended treatment for uncomplicated chlamydia urethritis—and is a LOT cheaper than an NAAT chlamydia test...
