If you are not on BCP contraception, and pregnancy is possible, this sustained and intermittant bleeding can represent pregnancy outside the uterus (ectopic). Get a serum HCG test to be certain, and if positive, see your gyn provider immediately. If on oral bcp's, and/or the HCG test is negative, non-punctual taking of the active bcp's can cause this type of bleeding.

A normal menstrual cycle (from the first day of one period to the next period) lasts 21 to 35 days. It is normal to bleed for up to seven days. Bleeding in excess of seven days or bleeding in between the two periods is considered abnormal. It can be due to variations in hormones, missed some birth control pills, infections, or even if you are stressed. But it's best see a doctor to get checked.
