"Old" or "expired" medications may not be effective. If oral bcp's are started during the first couple days of a normal period, and taken punctually, they are very effective ( greater than 97%) as contraceptives. Get a new prescription from your gyn provider and if symptoms (breast tenderness, water retention, etc.) occur, obtain a serum HCG test to be certain about pregnancy.
