Today's "low dose" oral contraceptives can be taken without a break of the active pills in one pack, starting the next pack as soon as the active pills are ended. The other pills in the pack are "placebo's" which have no value in contraception, but allow for withdrawal bleeding to occur. The protection is still provided by taking the new pack "early".
