It will be difficult to know if you are not smoking daily and even if your orthodontist suspects there is no reason he or she will tell your parents.

You are a minor, and therefore your parents should be informed of anything that can harm you. Smoking will increase your risk of damage to your gums and underlying bone, adversely affecting your Orthodontic treatment. Smoking will eventually probably kill you. So do't b e disappointed if your Orthodontist cares more about your welfare than you do.
