Some face chronic stool retention dating back even to childhood when kids avoided going for many reasons. This can balloon the large gut & stretch out its muscles so it becomes poor in aiding emptying. Over time the sensation of need to go fades & you either leak or pass hard/bulky poop. A year long rehab plan using scheduled evacuation/Miralax can help but you need a GI doc to guide you.

Agree with Dr. Ferguson. You may take a fiber laxative like Metamucil and drink enough water daily so that your urine is colorless. For the long term you may try to increase your intake of fiber foods. Consult this site for fiber foods. http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/in-depth/high-fiber-foods/art-20050948 Wish you good health!
