She would have to have direct contact with the object in question for there to be enough virus to get on your hand that you could then infect yourself. The answer is actually quite easy - wash your hands BEFORE and after using the restroom.

Agree with Dr. Maes. Additionally a cold sore on the lip is usually caused by a different strain of herpes than the one causing genital herpes, although if she got the sore from someone by having oral sex, it is possible that it is that same strain.
