This sounds like an infection that probably needs antibiotic treatment, and maybe incision and drainage if it's an abscess. Cancer sometimes can cause a painful lump, although unlikely. See a doctor ASAP -- do it immediately (even though it's a weekend) if the lump is especially painful, enlarging rapidly, or if you have fever. Good luck.
