Wart strains of HPV produce obvious skin lesions & are gone once removed, although the strain may persist in the tissues. Strains associated with cervical cancer will become dormant after 2 years. All HPV strains can persist after primary healing & those associated with cervical cancer can trigger changes months/years or decades after the first infection, or never.
