The first question I would ask is the pain is related to position or is it simply nocturnal. What is the quality of the pain and what makes it better or worse. Are there associated symptoms such as sweating , weight loss or nausea. There are a number of conditions that cause chest pain that can be narrowed down by a discussion with your MD. Tests are then confirmative of a suspected diagnosis.

Your age, and the occurrence of pain unrelated to activity, emotional stress etc argue against a cardiac origin of these symptoms. My first thought would be reflux esophagitis as a possible cause. Detailed history and evaluation by your primary physician could go a long way towards a clearer diagnosis with or without other tests such as endoscopy. Further, medications may help relieve your pain.
