MRI: MRI definitely gives you a better picture of the sift tissues and any disruption/abnormality. Unless you are concerned about vascular compromise of some type, you should not really need contrast. However, if pain occurs in certain positions that could indicate vascular compression or compromise, then getting it with contrast to see if everything is okay would be the way to go.
