Possibilities: The usual cause would be a retention of bilirubin in the babies system. This is a byproduct of metabolism & removed by mother's system during pregnancy. In the first few days after birth it can build up until babies system catches up with disposal through their gut. A mild amount is common & transient. Retention at high amounts or too long is a problem.

Elevated bilirubin: When bilirubin is elevated in a baby, the whites of the eyes can look yellow (jaundice).Babies cannot get rid of this chemical as easily in the first few days of life. When their liver gets more mature, they can do this better. If they measured the level in the hospital, they would know if it was too high.If the eyes were not yellow in the hospital but are now at home, you should call your baby's doctor
