No: Snapping or cracking the knuckles should not affect your fingers negatively. I have been doing it since i was 5 years old and I have been a dentist for 15 years. The noise is actually caused by air bubbles popping in he synovial fluid of the joints. No guarantees though.

Why chance it ?: You won't be able to work as a dentist if you have problems holding instruments. Who knows what wear and tear your habit is inflicting on the joints.

No: Cracking your knuckles will not cause arthritis--an old wives' tale. I have cracked my knuckles, neck and back since my teen years. Have been a practicing dentist for 25 years. Family history of arthritis? That's a major factor. If you can avoid the habit, you'll avoid grossing out a lot of people (staff and patients!). Study hard to be a conscientious dentist. Good luck.
