Semen viability: Sperm are viable, i.e. survive in the female genital tract for at least 2 days, and up to five in some instances. When we request a semen specimen for fertility evaluation, it is often looked at as much as 2 hours after ejaculation, and sperm remain viable and strong. Live sperm may be seen at 24 hours with this type specimen. Open to the air sperm are viable for a short period of time.
