Depends/age/degree: A true fever =or greater than 38c in a 2 -10 wk old should prompt an ER visit. In older kids most don't need treatment if the fever is less than 38.8 & the kid takes fluids well. If it troubles you acetaminophen or it plus Ibuprophen (after 6 mo) are worthwhile. A wet rag on the forehead can comfort them. A warm bath not cool enough to bring chill bumps can also help.

Address cause: Drs. F and F have suggested treatments for fever. However, it is imperative to ascertain the reason for the fever and address the cause. A viral infection may subside on its own, however, a bacterial infection requires antibiotic treatment. Keep the child well hydrated with water, fruit juice and electrolyte drinks. Wish you and your child good health!
