Pretty common: There is a roughly 15% chance of miscarrying any particular pregnancy, and there may be many more fertilizations that fail, but so early that we are never aware of it. A great many things have to go right at the very beginning for a pregnancy to continue, and the system is very efficient at selecting out the abnormal ones.
