Many factors: Self or at-home insemination requires some know how. The sperm are viable for longer than an hour if they a) don't dry out, and b) are not mixed with anything acidic. The other factor is the female needs to know exactly where she is in the ovulation cycle. Only during the 5 days surrounding ovulation is the cervical mucus protective of sperm- otherwise it kills them off.
