Yes: Allergic reactions to food usually occur within four hours of ingestion, but can also be delayed and persist for days. A test may be ordered by healthtap during a virtual consultation. Watch for signs of breathing difficulty, rash and swallowing difficulty. If these occur, please see the Emergency Department.

Alpha gal: The long and short answer is yes! There is something called an "alpha gal" allergy. Different from usual allergens which are proteins, these are carbohydrates. The most common meats are beef, lamb and pork. Typically, the allergic person will react to meat 3-6 hours after ingestion as opposed to much sooner. Hives are the more common reaction but angioedema and anaphylaxis have been reported.
