Many/avoid it: Lactose is the sugar commonly found in cow milk products. Absence of an enzyme in your gut cells (lactase) means it is not absorbed. Gut bacteria feed on it producing gas & acid. Bloating, pain, watery stools & anal pain are common symptoms. Most can be symptom free just by avoiding milk products. You can take the enzyme as a pill or use milk products with the enzyme in it.

Lactose intolerance?: Lactose intolerance is common--25% of caucasians, 80% of afro-americans, almost 100% asians. Lactose intolerance can be secondary to lactase enzyme deficiency, or due to a bigger problem of small bowel inflammation, infection, infiltrative disease, and/or maldigestion. Don't assume its lactose intolerance unless tested, or at least assessed response to lactase enzyme replacement (like lactaid).

Common symptoms of this condition include abdominal bloating, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, gas, and nausea. These symptoms tend to occur soon after the ingestion of milk products. Lactose isn't absore: Fermentation of lactose in the small inestine from failure to absorb lactose. The enzyme is present in adequate amounts in all children who are breast fed, and when age appropriate given regular milk. Blacks are suceptible to this at an earlier age, and caucasions, who go for long periods without injecting milk or other lactose containing products. Gas, bloating, cramps, and diarrhea can occur!
