A member asked:

39f had carotid ultrasound screening. the right ica peak systolic velocity is 84.00 cm/sec. the left ica peak systolic velocity is 80.00 cm/sec. what do those measures mean? are higher or lower numbers better here? thank you?

Peak systolic veloci: Carotid Ultrasound is a screening test for blockages in the carotid arteries but angiography is the gold standard test . Your values in both internal carotid arteries are normal and I gather that no plaque build-up or intimal thickening were noted. Velocity less than 125 cm/second are normal. 125-230 & with plaque is seen in 50-69% stenosis. Over 230 with plaque & narrowing is seen in over 70%
