Intubation vs trach: Intubation is usually a short term way to assure an airway for the patient in need. Prolonged intubation can result in damage to structures in the airway including the vocal cords. When the needs of the patient appear to dictate need for a long term airway solution a trach may be done. The issues/complications involved with either method usually dictate which method is used.
