Red, swollen and painful tonsils can be due to bacterial infections including strep throat, oral thrush or viral like oral herpes or mononucleosis. Do you have fever, rash or loss of appetite? Please see your doctor to find out cause of tonsilar pain so it can be treated promptly and properly. Hope it helps.
