Menopausal FSH/LH: At 54, ovulation is very irregular if at all, but estrogen is still produced in the ovaries, which thickens the lining of the uterus, and withdrawal bleeding will ensue. Ask a gyn physician about use of low dose oral contraceptives, not for "birth control" but to ease the transition through menopause, stop "hot flashes", and control this kind of bleeding.

Agree with Dr. B: It is a good idea for your mother to see her gynecologist for hormone treatment and to make sure that the intermittent bleeding is not due to a uterine disorder.
