Peri menopause: At age 54 your mother is in a phase of peri menopause, where hormone regulation of her waning period is "spotty" or irregular at best before the "tap " is shut off. However, sometimes other GYN conditions are masked by this process like endometrial cancer or uterine fibroids. Have your mother see her GYN MD and make sure that it is in fact just peri menopause and not something else.

Likely perimenopause: Moms' still going through a normal progression, cant' say officially menopause until no cycles for one year. Any other symptoms? , if bad she may be a candidate for hormone replacement therapy.
