I recently was told this could be neurological but i'd like a second opinion before seeing a doc. i had a "pinprick" pain near rear left shoulder blade, like a thorn, which has not gone away but the skin is numb around the area. it's been weeks now.

You may be right.: You may be experiencing irritation of a cervical nerve root in your neck (its posterior branch) which causes exactly what you describe, sometimes without neck or arm symptoms. Another possibility is irritation of the suprascapular nerve coming over the shoulder blade, often caused by carrying heavy bags with shoulder straps on that side. I encourage you to see a physician to have this sorted out
