Extrinsic Stain: An extrinsic stain is just that, a stain on the surface of the tooth. Carious lesions are caused by acids excreted from bacteria.

Stain: A stain is just that, a stain. But if the integrity of the enamel has been compromised and the area becomes stained, discolored, the decay process will progress whether or not staining is present. Have your Dentist check the area.
