Black stool: Black stool is a sign of bleeding in the stomach or duodenum. However, taking iron supplements, or bismuth containing antidiarrheal medications like peptobismol or kaopectate can cause black stools. Did he vomit red blood or coffee grounds looking material which are also signs of upper gi bleeding? I recommend getting checked in the hospital emergency room to check for bleeding gastritis or ulcer
