Worth an exam: There are many possible causes for allopecia (hair loss) but in children losing large clumps of hair, particularly if it leaves bald patches, is not considered normal. From fungal infections of the scalp, to doing their hair too tightly, to autoimmune disease, there are many possible reasons for the hair loss. A pediatrician should evaluate the child when possible.
