A member asked:

I stopped using depo provera after using it for about 10 years. i'm hoping to conceive in the future. i am getting severe abdominal cramps and breast sensitivity, but no period yet. is this normal? what are my odds of conceiving?

Normal for Depo: Depo provera is a progesterone only inject able contraceptive that keeps the endometrium (lining of the uterus/womb) minimal. Therefore, once it is discontinued, there is often a 3 to month delay in actual menstrual flow. However, ovulation will occur prior to menstrual flow for conception planning purposes.

Likely normal: The abdominal cramping and breast sensitivity sound like reassuring signs that your body is resuming normal hormone function. Production of estrogen by follicles in the ovaries where eggs are maturing can cause breast tenderness, and can thicken the lining of the uterus - in preparation for either conception (!) or having a period. Time will tell, but these symptoms sound like good signs!
