Septic Shock: I am sorry about what you are going through. Sepsis and septic shock are serious medical conditions to deal with, both for the patient and the ICU team. A one month stay in the ICU indicates multiple organs have likely failed by now. By this time the doctors have likely done what they could. Never lose hope but remain realistic. There comes a point when doing nothing is the right thing to do.

Usually one treats: With antibiotics and lo to find a cause for the infection. Sometimes, the cause can't be found, but antibiotics are treated against the organism found on culture.

Sepsis and edema: You mother is obviously quite sick. You should ask her physicians why her sepsis is not improving. She may have a low serum Albumin (a) level that causes her to retain water. A low a means that she has a low oncotic pressure which leads to edema formation. Questions to ask: how low is her a? Is she receiving diuretics? Is she being fed? How are her heart and kidney function doing.? Good luck.

She is quite sick and say involved with her medical care. It's good to ask questions about what is being done, just don't interfere with her treatment. Hope for a quick recovery!
