A member asked:

Is it harmful to take doxycyclene for a prolonged time? my son has been in a malaria area and is going again in two months!

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not really: There are anti malarials he could take that are not doxycycline, like Malarone (atovaquone and proguanil) and lariam. Some you take once a week for a period before, during, and after. Doxycycline should not be taken for months, but a few weeks won't cause much harm. Contact your doc and local travel clinic/ health department for malaria prophylaxis alternatives.
