I have a sore throat and a sore ear. my wife is a pharmacist has been sent for corona virus testing today because she also has a sore throat and is running a slight fever. 37.5. i would normally see my gp but i dont want to put anybody at risk?

Some basics: those who develop shortness of breath or difficulty breathing with minor exertion would fall into the subgroup of covid-19 patients likely to need hospital care & need immediate testing/evaluation. Those who must work with the public with lesser symptoms are a 2nd category that need testing. All others are likely safer sheltering at home unless their pattern changes.
