A member asked:

I've read repts suggesting the recommended 6ft isn't enough to distance from possible covid transmission, while others say it is. don't know what to think. does it make a diff if you are outside & it is windy? would that make germs travel farther?

Wind blow away germs: Walking outside is ok because there's lots of airflow. If wanting to be more safe, stay at least 3 meters or 10 feet in front of or behind people (even farther if people coughing or sneezing). The US government is finally agreeing that people in this respiratory pandemic can improve protection by wearing masks. Worry more if downwind from a sneeze, but lots of wind means everyone's safer. 6 ft not ideal: My understanding is that vigorous exhalations such as coughs or sneezes can shear liquid droplets from respiratory mucosa, and eject them as far as 27 feet (8.2 meters) in still air. Ordinary quiet breathing likely does not eject droplets beyond about 1.5 meters into still air, and ejects far fewer and much smaller droplets. In wind, droplets ejected can travel farther downwind, but not upwind.
