What is venous thrombosis?

Clot in the vein.: Venous thrombosis is a blood clot in the vein, which is a vessel that carries blood from an organ back to your heart. Typically we talk about venous thrombosis in terms of deep venous thromboses, or dvts, which are clots in the "deep veins." these can be particularly dangerous because of their potential to break off and travel to the lungs, what we call a "pulmonary embolism, " which can be fatal.

Vein Blood Clot: Venous thrombosis most often occurs in the leg veins. If it is in the deep leg veins it is called a deep venous thrombosis (dvt). This is a dangerous condition requiring medical attention and treatment with blood thinners. If the clot is in veins under the skin it is not particularly serious and is treated with moist heat and drugs like motrin.
