A member asked:

I am on a 3 year iud and im due for a replacement july 2020 and i had unprotected sex for the first few minutes and then a condom was placed on would my iud still be affective its hasnt really been 3 years yet?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

No worries, but...: IUD's are for prevention of pregnancy. An IUD does not prevent infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, HPV, etc... If any chance of infections in either person, more protection is needed. Contraceptive effect of IUD's lasts for some time longer than the date due for replacement. There is no noticeable difference in the month before that date and the month after that date. Life is not that exact!
