A member asked:

Bleeding at 5w4d, gynae did transvaginal scan, saw a heartbeat, prescribed 400mg progesterone (utrogestan) for 4 days and now 200mg. my progesterone levels were normal/high at 105. why do i have to keep taking it? causing extreme nausea & fatigue.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Pregnancy ?'s: At "5w 4d", with a detectable heart beat, if your physician felt that a miscarriage were possible ( for example, if you were having some bleeding) progesterone is appropriate. Until the pregnancy is 9-10 weeks along, the ovaries produce the necessary progesterone, after which the placenta produces it. Usually progesterone orally can be stopped at 9-10 weeks of pregnancy.
