The situation is not dire. The risk of getting seriously ill from COVID 19 is very low if one is vaccinated. This is true even with some breakthrough infections. In addition there are now several beneficial treatments for COVID 19 ( Remdesivir, Steroids, Monoclonal antibodies etc) in those who get infected. While serious COVID 19 now more treatable, and vaccination is protective regardless.
