Bereavement vs MDD: There isn't a specific form of depression per se that is "caused" by the death of a loved one. However, a condition called "bereavement" occurs when one develops depressive symptoms in response to the death of a loved one, which acknowledges the normal human response to loss. However, when these symptoms exceed 6 months, an additional diagnosis of depression is often warranted albeit variations.
