A member asked:

Does irritable bowel syndrome interfere with food utilization in the intestine?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Maybe/not: IBS is a general label often applied to non-specific chronic gut irritation. It is quite common & varies in intensity from patient to patient. Much of the nutrient capture within the gut will continue normally for most, while some local areas of irritated gut may not do as well. In general a person can & does usually consume enough that they do not loose weight or become deficient.
