Many things: Trauma such as broken bones, sprains, strains. Problems with veins and lymphatic systems. Systemic disorders such as high blood pressure, and heart failure. Blood clots may cause swelling of one leg. Treatment can include elevation and compressive wraps along with medication. See your primary care physician for an evaluation.

Pericarditis : Pericarditis typically has a relatively benign course in uncomplicated cases. Conversely, patients with high-risk features (ie, high fever, large pericardial effusion, cardiac tamponade, failure to respond to antiinflammatory therapy) are at increased risk of short-term complications. Leg swelling is not a common presentation of pericarditis, but could potentially be a feature of heart failure.

Fluid retention: If it is just one leg, then it usually infers something in the leg itself including blood clot, infection, gout, injury, etc. if it is both legs, that usually suggests systemic fluid retention which usually collects first in the legs. Either way, don't hesitate to be seen and accurately diagnosed.
